Dear Animal Advocates,
Reminder: Ivory Crush at Times Square is this Friday morning: http://www.fws.gov/le/elephant-ivory-crush.html
This event is open to the public and features USFWS Director Dan Ashe. Organizing partners in the Ivory Crush include Wildlife Conservation Society, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, New York State Senator Brad Hoylman, and Powerscreen; other partners in the Crush include the African Wildlife Foundation, The Humane Society of the United States, International Fund for Animal Welfare, Natural Resources Defense Council, and World Wildlife Fund.
The reason why crushing is done as a strategy to combat poaching is in order to send a clear message that illicit ivory has no value. Further, in the past, releases of stockpiled ivory into the marketplace (from ivory confiscated by African authorities) has fueled elephant massacres: http://www.hsi.org/campaigns/dont_buy_wild/african_ivory_trade.html
Yesterday, this was printed in Scientific American:
